How To:

How to get started on applying your new foam

  • Measure the diameter of the shell from bearing edge to bearing edge without the hoop.

  • Preparation is Key:
Ensure a clean slate by removing any existing foam from your drums. Thoroughly clean the surface for optimal adhesion.

    Visualize Your Placement:
Before gluing, position the foam inside the drum to gauge proper application. Strive for evenness around the shell, leaving approximately 1/4 inch above the bearing edge.

    Choose the Right Adhesive:
Opt for the longevity of 3M 90 spray adhesive. Its convenient spray nozzle ensures a precise and lasting application. Directly apply the adhesive to the drum shell.

    Apply Adhesive to Foam:
After a thin stripe on the drum shell, add a layer of adhesive directly onto the foam. This dual application ensures a strong bond between the drum and foam.

    Strategic Placement:
Work in small sections when placing the foam in the drum. Having a helper guide the other end can make the process smoother. Adjustments are possible before the glue fully sets.

    Precision is Key:
Double-check the foam's alignment above the bearing edge to maintain consistent placement around the drum.

    Firm Adhesion:
Once satisfied with the placement, press the foam down firmly to secure it to the drum.

    Patience Pays Off:
Allow the adhesive to dry for a minimum of one hour, up to 24 hours, before installing your drum heads. This ensures a solid bond for long-lasting performance.

  • Customize your sound by fine-tuning the contact between the foam and the drum head. Achieve a drier tone by allowing the foam to protrude 1/2 inch above the bearing edge, or opt for a more resonant sound with a subtle 1/10 inch protrusion. Straying beyond these measurements is not advised, as it may compromise the functionality of the foam.

Choosing your foam

This is the place to start if you’re looking for a specific sound.

  • Our standard B24 foam is a great choice when you don’t have a specific sound preference you’re looking for. If you have a specific sound you’re looking for, feel free to reach out for a consultation to find the best foam for your ensemble.

  • Our products are all labeled with a letter and a number.

The letter signifies foam density. "B" marks the standard density, while "Q" designates our high-resilience foam with increased density.

The number indicates foam firmness. A higher number correlates with a firmer foam, offering a straightforward guide to selecting the perfect fit for your needs.

  • Firmness: Determines rigidity; firmer foam gives less when the drum head vibrates.

Density: Dictates weight; denser foam means less air, reducing reverb during drum head vibrations.
